Condition is Fair-Good: very clean with the occasional small spot or smudge. Sewn binding secure, but cracked in a few places, including title/copyright page with evidence of an old clear tap repair. Frontis itself is tearing upwards about 2" from bottom edge, but image is intact. Pages creamy white with modest tanning, completely unmarked save for former owner's name & address in lovely script to ffep. Significant rubbing & bumping to extremities, with fraying to corners & spine tips. No DJ (missing). "Aunt Liza's "Praisin' Gate" by Effie Graham is a scarce 1916 Kansas-set work centered around Aunt Liza, an elderly disabled woman who had once been enslaved in Tennessee and now lives in Kansas. Written in period Black dialect, the book reflects the raci…al, regional, and social attitudes of its time, while also giving Aunt Liza a memorable voice, presence, and moral center. The title refers to her "Praisin' Gate," marked by a handwritten sign, which becomes part of the book's character and charm. The story carries strong Americana and Kansas regional interest, with themes touching on formerly enslaved people building lives in the West, community life, faith, dignity, humor, and the changing social world of the early 20th century. It also includes references to the women's suffrage movement, adding another layer of historical interest. Effie Graham herself is noted by rare-book sellers as a Kansas-connected writer, suffragette, and mathematics teacher, and this book was published by A.C. McClurg & Co. in 1916 with decorations/illustrations by Fred J. Arting. More than a century later, this first edition has somehow held on to all of it: clean boards, an attractive dust jacket, charming Fred J. Arting decorations (illudtrations) throughout, and the unmistakable presence of a book that has watched the world change from the Wilson administration onward. 196 pages. . The book is in fantastic shape, The Dust Jacket has some chipping on the top and the bottom of the spine but the binding is intact, and the interior is clean with no writing, markings, only light, age-appropriate toning is present.
