Fünf broschierte Bände, zus. ca. 2700 Seiten. 23 x 16,5 cm Jerzy Toeplitz' Filmgeschichte ist nach wie vor unerreicht, vor allem, was die Anfänge des Films betrifft. Man wird kaum eine so gut lesbare und gleichzeitig kenntnisreich geschriebene Filmgeschichte finden, die das Thema auf ebenso hohem Niveau behandelt. Die einzelnen Bände sind alle in etwa nach demselben Schema aufgebaut: Die Entwicklungen bzw. Epochen der Filmgeschichte sind nach Ländern unterteilt, was aber nicht heißen soll, dass internationale Wechselwirkungen zu kurz kämen. Toeplitz befasst sich nicht nur mit den "üblichen Verdächtigen", sondern widmet sich auch ausführlich den vermeintlichen Außenseitern, die zu ihrer Zeit oft sehr einflussreich waren und deren Einfluss auf den Film bis heute feststellbar ist -- man denke nur an den frühen schwedischen oder französischen Film. Hinzu kommt, dass Toeplitz auch auf die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Film und anderen Kunstformen eingeht, und auch wichtige filmtheoretische und -ästhetische Überlegungen zur jeweiligen Epoche werden ausführlich behandelt. Tatsächlich dürften einige seiner Kapitel bis heute -- Toeplitz schrieb sein opus magnum in den 1950er Jahren -- die vollständigsten zum jeweiligen Thema sein. Bestechend sind auf jeden Fall die Kapitel über den frühen Film in den einzelnen europäischen Staaten, den sowjetischen Film, den Film der Weimarer Republik, und die Slapstick-Filme in den USA. Jedes dieser Kapitel ersetzt gut und gern eine Monographie zum Thema. Hinzu kommt ein opulenter Bildteil. Gewöhnungsbedürftig ist hier nur, dass Toeplitz von Zeit zu Zeit sein "sozialistisches Soll" erfüllen musste, wie ich das nenne: Immerhin verfasste er diese Enzyklopädie des Kinos im Polen der 1950er Jahre, wie gesagt. Das bedeutet, dass man die betreffenden Passagen eben einfach auslassen muss. Ihrem Autor kann man sie nicht ankreiden. Diese Filmgeschichte hat eigentlich nur einen Nachteil: Sie endet mit dem Film der frühen 1950er Jahre. Aber das kann man Jerzy Toeplitz schließlich nicht vorwerfen. Nur zur Erinnerung daran, daß und wie sehr Nachschlagewerke die Ergänzung durch thematische Darstellungen benötigen, sei hier kurz an die klassische internationale Filmgeschichte von Jerzy Toeplitz erinnert. Das monumentale Werk ist in Einzelbänden im polnischsprachigen Original seit 1955, in der deutschen Übersetzung seit 1972 erschienen (Bd. 5 1991), war in der BRD jahrelang nur über den Buchversand 2001 (Rogner & Bernhard bei 2001 in Lizenz des Henschel-Verlags) zu erhalten und wurde endlich 1992 in allen 5 Bänden in broschierter Ausgabe durch den Henschel-Verlag wieder und zu erschwinglichem Preis angeboten, der inzwischen noch einmal halbiert worden ist. Toeplitz hat mit seinem Werk zur künstlerischen Kanonisierung der internationalen Filmgeschichte vor allem der Zwischenkriegszeit beigetragen und hat im großen und alles überschauendem Zugriff Filmgeschichte in ihren Inhalten, ihren großen Zügen und vielfältigen Details festgeschrieben, so wie wir sie weithin heute (noch) wahrnehmen. Nicht nur das hohe Alter des Autors, sondern die spätestens in den 50er Jahren einsetzende unüberschaubare Diversifizierung und internationale Verästelung der Filmproduktion, auch die der künstlerisch ernst zu nehmenden Produktion, führt zum Abbruch seiner /*Geschichte des Films*/ mit dem Jahr 1953. Benutzbar im Sinne eines Nachschlagewerkes werden die 5 Bände durch die umfangreichen Register und bibliographischen Nachweise zu den einzelnen Bänden; ein Gesamtregister fehlt leider, doch helfen die zeitliche Gliederung und die regionale Binnengliederung der Einzelbände etwas darüber hinweg. Alle Filme werden getrennt mit ihren Originaltiteln und den deutschen Verleih- und Übersetzungstiteln indexiert, die Personenregister und vor allem die Register der Filmfirmen und Filmschulen erschließen weitere Details. Die Inhaltsverzeichnisse vermitteln mit ihren ausführlichen Angaben (bis zu 2 Seiten je Kapitel im Fließtext) nahezu das Programm für die Niederschrift der Kapitel. Nicht nur die Bibliographie, sondern auch die Anmerkungen im Text, verweisen auf speziellere Literatur, die reiche Illustrierung vergegenwärtigt wichtige Filme in Einzelbildern und Sequenzen; leider fällt die Wiedergabequalität der schon früher nicht optimalen Schwarz-weiß-Bilder durch die Offset-Wiedergabe in der broschierten Sonderausgabe im Vergleich zur Originalausgabe weiter ab.
