A charming and beautifully illustrated vintage children's book telling the adventures of Bobby and his sister Babs, who live near the famous Zoological Gardens. The story follows the two children as they encounter the animals and get involved in a series of imaginative adventures at the zoo. The book is particularly notable for its superb colour illustration by Fred Spurgin, together with numerous attractive black-and-white illustrations throughout. Spurgin's distinctive early 20th-century style is very evident, with lively depictions of the children and animals. The book has a particularly attractive full-colour pictorial cover, featuring the children alongside a tiger, rhinoceros, camel, bear and other zoo animals. The illustrations include imaginative scenes such as the children apparently riding through the zoo on a giant bird. Published by Thirkell & Pearce, and apparently dating from the 1920s. No copyright date or printing history is given in the book. A lovely example of the illustrated children's books of the period, and an appealing item for collectors of Fred Spurgin, early children's books, illustrated books and vintage zoological/zoo-themed books. The book is in Fair condition overall with grubby boards and chipped / scuffed corner tips and spine ends. The opening end papers are likewise grubby but the remaining text block is clean and the full colour illustrations throughout the book intact and complete.
