Loin des grandes icônes de la vie quotidienne, de la grandeur tragique de l'art austère et rude qui ont fait de Marcel Gromaire l'un des peintres français les plus renommés des années 1930, le nu, cette part méconnue de sa création, apparaît avec une étonnante constance dans la totalité de son oeuvre peint, dessiné et gravé. Niée par l'artiste qui n'écrivit pratiquement jamais sur cette thématique de la nudité dans l'art, cette dimension de son oeuvre apparaît cependant aujourd'hui comme l'une des tentatives les plus audacieuses d'érotisme de l'art du XXe siècle.
