Hardcover. 16mo, 16.5cm, 201,[2]pp., head & tailpiece decoration, in full contemporary calf, gilt spine decorations, crushed crimson morocco label, some peeling on the fore edges of the boards, edges worn, small stamp on title page, very good copy (Tds). - Frederic Hasselquist (1722-1752), Swedish explorer and naturalist, undertook a trip through Asia Minor, Egypt, Palestine and Cyprus from 1749 to 1752 under the instigation of Charles Linnaeus. On his return voyage, Hasselquist died and five years later Linnaeus published "Voyages", in Swedish, based on Hasselquist's notes. Translations followed into German and French (1762) and English (1766). Volume two includes an eulogy by Linnaeus "Eloge du Docteur Frederic Hasselquist".

Édition originale française. L'ouvrage est divisé en deux parties : la première comprend le Journal d'Hasselquist et les lettres qu'il écrivit d'Orient à Linné ; dans la seconde, on trouve les observations concernant l'histoire naturelle, les maladies et la médecine des orientaux. Hasselquist était l'un des étudiants de Linné qui voyageaient outre-mer pour enquêter sur les plantes de régions inexplorées, en l'occurrence la Palestine, la Syrie, Chypre, Rhodes et Chios. L'auteur mourut à Smyrne en 1752, à l'âge de 30 ans, et son ouvrage fut publié à titre posthume par Linné qui le décrit comme étant plein d'observations fraîches, authentiques et précises : Ğ Un journal de voyage aussi admirable n'a jamais paru auparavant. ğ. Hage Chahine 2134. Blackmer 792. Édition originale de la traduction (sur l'édition allemande de 1762), par M. Eidous. L'édition originale, en suédois, avait été publiée en 1757. Blackmer dit qu'il s'agit de la première histoire naturelle systématique de la Terre Sainte. Frédéric Hasselquist était un naturaliste suédois, élève de Linné. Malgré une mauvaise santé, il entreprit un voyage au Levant. Il y étudia particulièrement l'histoire naturelle de la Palestine et de l'Égypte, et rassembla de riches collections. Mais il mourut à Smyrne en 1752. La Reine de Suède acheta ses collections pour les musées nationaux et Liné utilisa son herbier pour sa Flora Palestina et publia ses observations et ses recherches. Bon exemplaire malgré les petits défauts signalés. 1769.
