Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. pp: 272. The first edition bound in pictorial dust jacket, with wrap-around illustration, over brown decorative cloth boards lettered in gilt. The purpose of the Folger collection was to highlight the significance of William Shakespeare and his works to civilization. The library is intended to be a research library for scholars, and so ".the full significance of its holdings in fine and important bindings has not been generally recognized." (Foreword). The intention of this volume is to illustrate the variety, and importance of the bindings, and to collate the results in one volume for public consumption. More than 160 books were selected. The researchers sought to focus on the history and decoration of bookbindings. This is a near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket. This copy has been in a private collection since publication.
