Softcover. 1st US edition. [12], 130 p.; 21.5 cm. (Studies in biblical theology. Second series ; 14) Contents: Preface -- Abbreviations -- I The priority of the Son of Man in rival parallel sayings: 1 the search for historical contexts; 2 Jeremias' categories; 3 eleven parallel sayings; 4 concluding remarks -- II The Son of Man in early church literature: 1 in the Acts, Epistles and Revelation; 2 the early fathers; 3 other early traditions; 4 concluding remarks -- III The Son of Man in gnostic literature: 1 references by early Christian fathers to gnostic uses; 2 references in gnostic writings; 3 concluding remarks -- Index of modern authors -- Index of references. -- From the Preface: `Because of the title of my 1967 study [The Son of Man in myth and history] and because the designation does occur in several of the gnostic writings and out of a spirit of puckishness, it was tempting to entitle this work `The Son of the Son of Man'. The present title is, however, no doubt more indicative of the concerns of the book, and I am appreciative of the opportunity to test several aspects of my earlier thesis, especially through materials of the second century AD, in more depth than I was previously able to do.' -- `Once more the context is that of the creation or generation or the son of the God-Man. Again the myth conceives of the Man as invisible and unknown, while the son is at least to some degree knowable as his manifestation. This much relates the passage to those studied above which were drawn from the followers of Colorbasus and Marcus and from the Ophites. Monoimus, then, goes on to give this Son of the Man a definite role in the maintenance of the creation.' (p. 71) VG, sewn, in orig. white wrapper.
