"Today, as we re-peruse the chefs-d'oeuvre of this master penman, it does not occur to us to blench, on irrelevant, unaesthetic grounds. Smiling tolerance of the artist's exuberant daring has today succeeded the virulent destation of late-Victorian moralists, who designated Beardsley's brilliant and elightful studies 'shocking,' 'decadent,' 'unwholesome'" - from the Biographical Introduction by Kenelm Foss.
