Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Sixth edition. Original gray decorative cloth, 237 pp + 10 pp ads for "Names and Titles of Jesus" + 3 pp ads for "Essays" + 1 ad for a work in progress, illustrated with frontispiece. Hardcover, fair to good. Cloth soiled, corners bumped with cardboard exposed there and at spots along edges of boards,… approximately 1 inch piece chipped off head of spine, ½ inch off foot. Internally, foxed throughout, front hinge cracked, additional hinge cracks between a few of the gatherings, 1 or 2 dogears, pencil bracketing on a dozen or so page, previous owner's heraldic bookplate (Frederick I Hackenburg, lawyer, judge, New York State Assemblyman, and author) , , another previous owner's inscription, "Property of (illegible) , Bot (bought) of the Author, Attenboro (Attenborough) Aug 1844", and some notations (in pencil) on front endpapers, otherwise clean and unmarked. Pioneering work on the injustice of capital punishment by a prominent Universalist, prison reformer and Abolitionist. Interesting association copy, both for Hackenburg's ownership, and the contemporary inscription, presumably by an audience member at one of Spear's numerous lectures. Jurisprudence; history; law.
