This book uses a geochemical analysis of nickel and vanadium content in Chesterian (Upper Mississippian) Waltersburg crude oils to consider the theory that these oils migrated from older sediments into the Waltersburg Formation. The authors also assessed the light hydrocarbon components in a selection of the crude oil samples. The authors found strong regional trends in the trace metal contents of the crude oils that mostly align parallel to the primary sediment transport direction in the ancient basin. They interpreted this as indicating the oils came from an older, deeper source. Almost random variations were found in the naphthene and aromatic contents of a series of crudes entrapped in isolated Waltersburg sand bodies in southeastern Illinois. This book will be of great interest to geologists and those interested in petroleum geochemistry. The trace metal data, in general, support the fault source hypothesis of Swann. The relation between these trace metal trends and the paleogeography of the ancient basin suggests that trace metals were somehow inherited from the primary source materials from which the crudes were formed.
