Limited to 1050 copies, this copy is No. 726. Printed in Perpetua on deckle-edge antique laid paper with a rough-cut edge but gilt edge to the top. With a white vellum spine and leather label and buckram navy boards with a gilt coat of arms on the front. Frontispiece and 20 plates, including 2 maps and several facsimiles. Dent at top right corner. Bookplate of Fr. Sean O'Corcora, the former Maynooth University librarian on front endpaper. Very light foxing on ffep. Otherwise clean bright and tight. No pen marks or inscriptions. The black cardboard slipcase has edge wear to all corners. The original owner Fr. Seán O'Corcora (John Corkery) was a graduate of St. Patricks College, Maynooth. He held the post of Librarian to St. Patricks College, Maynooth from 1951-1973. During this time he developed the library and its permanent collections. He was a collector of books and pictures personally and an authority on the rare items within the Maynooth University collections on which he issued many publications. He was a priest of the diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise and was Parish Priest of Aughnacliffe in Co. Longford. Much of his collection related to book history, libraries, printers and travel magazines. He had an immense interest in libraries, travel, art, literature, architecture and the environment. He was highly regarded amongst authors and publishers worldwide and many of his personally owned books were received as gifts.
