Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is the fascinating autobiography of Friedrich, Baron von Trenck, a Prussian officer, adventurer, and author. Born into nobility in 1726, he became a soldier at the age of 18. He served under Frederick the Great in the Silesian Wars, gaining recognition for his bravery and lea…dership. However, his outspoken nature and alleged treasonous correspondence led to his imprisonment in 1746. After several daring escape attempts, he finally succeeded in fleeing to Austria in 1747. The autobiography chronicles Trenck's military exploits, his imprisonment, and his life as a fugitive. It offers insights into 18th-century Prussia, the realities of warfare, and the complexities of honor, loyalty, and betrayal. Trenck's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity and a captivating read for anyone interested in military history, adventure, or the human condition. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition in English, from the original in German in 1787. Two volumes, small octavo. [I - iii] iv - xiii [1] 2-222 and [i] [1] 2 - 222. Contains a dedication by the translator, not named but giving his initials as T.D., to Lord Heathfield, and the Author's dedication to the ghos…t of Frederick the Great. Trenck had been an orderly officer to Frederick the Great of Prussia during the Silesian War. At one point, after nearly being captured by Trenck's first cousin, the Austrian Baron Franz von der Trenck, the king decided that his orderly was a spy and had him imprisoned. Trenck's dedication here is an impassioned denial that he was ever a spy. Since King Frederick had died the previous year, the dedication is to his ghost. Trenck's memoirs became widely read. He was sent by the Austrian monarch to Paris to be an observer of the French Revolution. While there, he was accused by the French of being a spy, and was guillotined in July 1794. The bindings for this work are half brown calf over marbled boards by Mansell. Spines with raised bands, two morocco title labels and gilt in compartments. Bookplates on the front pastedowns and endpapers. Light scuffing to the spines, else a near fine, clean set.
