La parte di maggiore interesse storiografico (ma non soltanto storiografico) del volume riguarda la ricostruzione, con dettagli inediti, di un primo velleitario tentativo di sganciamento dell'Italia dalla guerra e dall'Asse, intrapreso nel 1942 su indicazione di Ciano e di Buffarini-Guidi. Il tentativo, che avrebbe dovuto essere concretizzato attraverso una missione riservata a Lisbona, ruotava attorno agli ambienti del governo polacco in esilio che si proponevano come mediatori.
