Small stain and tear at spine heel, mull tight but exposed at junction of one page (opened too widely?). Overall a nice crisp and bright copy with a little toning to edges of cover. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

One of 210 copies printed, the entire edition. A presentation copy, inscribed in extremely lovely brown ink-script to Llewellyn Jones, U.S. writer and literary editor of the Chicago Evening Post, one of the signatories to Humanist Manifesto I, from Joseph Ishill, typographer and publisher of the Oriole Press. Includes four-page prospectus laid into book. Only a few copies were sold; all others destroyed because the author, on a lecture tour of Japan, wrote soon after publication that nearly all of his former ideas about Japan were mistaken. Printed ans set by hand with the twelve point Garamond; line cut on the title page after a drawing by the Japanese artist Yosai; head piece and Goudy initials. Two-color. A beautiful, well-preserved book. In plastic sleeve. Translated from the French. Size: 4to. Association Signed By Publisher.

Rose Freeman-Ishill, a frequent contributor to Oriole Press publications, was the wife of Joseph Ishill, the sole proprietor of the press. Near Fine in original quarter cloth over handmade paper covered boards, slight toning to the cloth. 28 pp. An essay by the French art historian Elie Faure. Printed and set with 12 point Garamond, the line-cut on the title page after a drawing by the Japanese artist Yosai, initials by Frederic W. Goudy. SCARCE, the last copy to come to auction was in 1982. Apparently, most copies were destroyed in a fire.(Ransom, W. Selective check lists of press books). Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Books were originally published between the years of 1917 and 1948; this compilation was published in 1962. A boxed set containing the collected works of Rose Freeman-Ishill, containing eight volumes: Vol. I- Petals Blown Adrift; Vol. II- Rain Among the Bamboos; Vol. III- Poems; Vol. IV- Dedications; Vol. V- Translations; Vol. VI- Carved Crosses; Vol. VII- Views and Reviews; and Vol. VIII- Miscellanea. Set contains eight slender volumes in a green cloth-covered box which has green and red titling on a spine label; each volume has a different colour of paper wraps on card covers, leading edges of text blocks untrimmed, Vol. I has blue and green titling on a white label on front, the remaining books have blue and red titling on front covers, Vol. 1 has a two-colour frontispiece which is a portrait of the author from a woodcut by Maurice Duvalet, each poem in Vol. 1 has an illuminated first letter, all volumes have a coloured woodcut illustration at back, pages range from 49 for Vol. 1 to 21 for Vol. V. Spines of each book very lightly faded, Vol. 1 has a slightly foxed title label and a pale small mark to front and back; Vol. II has a slight bump to upper spine end; Vol. III has some slight darkening on back cover along spine and a light bump to upper spine end; Vol. V has a tiny dark speck to back cover; Vol. VI has a slight bump to upper spine end; Vol. VII has a small, pale smudge on front and a light bump to upper spine end; Vol. VIII has some pale smudge to back, interiors of all volumes are clean and tight. The title label on the box is sunned. This is a very handsome set of books, in very nice condition. Shipping charges are calculated for a standard parcel under 1 kg.
