He was born in the city of Beja. For the ecclesiastical career, he studied Humanities at the University of Évora, starting then to Coimbra, whose University obtained the 18th of May of 1618 a bachelor's degree in Canons. He proved to be a poet of merit, writing joking-serious satires in which he ridiculed the taste of his contemporaries, apparently aimed at Castilian society, since then Portugal and Spain were in personal union.He was appointed abbot of the Mother Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção de Sambade, in the term of Alfândega da Fé, then of royal patronage, remaining there between 1620 and 1625 . He was then transferred to the abbot of Santa Maria de Chaves.
