Condition: Good. - Approximately 119 words penned in black ink on a 8-1/4 inch high by 5-1/4 inch wide sheet of bluish-gray paper. Signed "B. S Hilaire". The paper is lightly bumped with its edges slightly faded. There is a small tear to the right edge. Folded twice for mailing. Good. Barthelemy-Saint-Hilaire writes in French to… an English gentleman who has been referred to him by Lord Houghton. He apologizes for failing to find him at a crowded function. He explains that he had ordered the guards to make sure that the gentleman got past the door, and had also brought with him a friend who spoke very good English. He says that he is completely at the gentleman's disposal if he can be of use in acquainting him with "nos affaires politiques", which at the moment are very complicated.Jules Barthelemy-Saint-Hilaire [1805-1895] was a French statesman and philosopher. In his early years he worked for the Ministry of Finance and was an active journalist. After 1830 he gave up politics in order to devote himself to the study of ancient philosophy, undertaking a translation of Aristotle which occupied him for most of his life. After the revolution of 1848 he was elected a republican deputy from the department of Seine-et Oise. Following further political upheavals he was apppointed senator for life. From 18800-81 he was minister of foreign affairs in the cabinet of Jules Ferry.

3 pp. on bifolium. Large 8vo. With integral autograph address panel. - Bonald took an important role in the Bourbon Restoration, implementing a law that in 1822 abolished the freedom of press. He is remembered for developing a set of social theories that went on to shape the ontological framework from which French sociology would emerge. - Small cuts and clips from opening.

3 letters 8vo (135 x 210 mm), 3 pp. (one on a bifolium), plus one letter 12mo (114 x 130 mm), 1 p. Correspondence from one of France's prominent philosophers and republican politicians during the Second Empire and the Third Republic, some dating from his brief tenure as president of the latter. Together, they offer a cross-secti…on of his trajectory from oppositional thinker to head of government. The work was an expression of his republican principles in opposition to the power of Napoleon III. - 2) A statement reading "Je jure obéisance à la constitution en fidélité à l'empereur", dated Paris, 9 May 1863, probably in connection with his standing as a candidate in the elections of the following month. The careful wording was clearly chosen to allow the republican statesman to avoid swearing loyalty to the emperor directly. - 3) Paris, 19 January, year not given but clearly 1877 as it is on letterhead of the Ministery of the Interior, a post he held together with Presidency between 12 December 1876 and 17 May 1877, which accounts for how busy he was at the time: in attempting to arrange dinner with a friend, he states that Monday is the only day he has free all week. - 4) 13 December, no year. Personal blue paper embossed JS. A letter on business, seemingly the signing of a letter - no response from Martel, while Languinois abstains as he is no longer a deputy. If from 1876 as seems likely, this would date to the day after Simon assumed the posts of Président du Conseil des ministres and Ministre de l'Intériuer. The personal letterhead implies a more informal side of political negotiations. - A collection which together offers glimpses into the life of a politician and intellectual of later nineteenth-century France. - Light browning according with age, one item with creases and tears, repaired, some very light smudging and staining in a few places. All items clear and legible, all signatures clean and elegant.

Autograph postcard signed.

4to. French manuscript on paper. (2) pp. on 2 ff. Interesting early manuscript of chapter I/2 of his series of articles entitled "Les communistes et la paix" that was first published in Sartre's journal "Les Temps modernes" (July 1952 - April 1954) and later in its entirety and thoroughly revised as part of the collection Situat…ions VI (1964). The original title of the chapter, "Moscou veut la guerre", sets the cynical tone of the text that was first conceived in reaction to the deadly suppression of the Paris protests against General Ridgway on 28 May 1952 and the subsequent wrongful arrest of the French communist leader Jacques Duclos. Sartre accuses Western, particularly U.S. politicians of hypocrisy as, in the name of peace, they employ the violent and belligerent means that theye ascribe to the Soviet Union, polemically asking, in a deleted section: "Do you not also pretend to desire peace? I look for your olive twigs and I see atomic bombs, I look for your doves and I see rocket planes. You say that you show your force so as not to have to make use of it. But to show force is already violence: let your tanks defile, cover the African sky with your bombers [.]". - With "Les communistes et la paix" Sartre publicly affirmed his support of the French Communist Party, despite its loyalty to Stalin, which would cause his rupture with Maurice Merleau-Ponty. In 1956, appalled by the Soviet invasion of Hungary, Sartre definitely broke with the party. Unsurprisingly, the corresponding pages in the 1964 publication Situations VI (96-97) are very different from the manuscript and the article. - Some browning and bent corners.
