A very scarce work.The first edition thus, printed from the collection of Thomas Sharp's largely unpublished documents regarding the history and antiquities of Coventry. The editor, William George Fretton, explains that 'about twelve copies were printed for private distributions among the author's friends.Fretton includes notes made by Sharp in the margins of his own copy, and adds a memoir of the author, and corrections, to this volume. The work discusses churches, schools and other buildings in the county, including the Grey Friar's Monastery and St. John's Hospital.Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, and five plates.Collated, complete.Including a memoir of the author.Bookplate of Matthew Bloxam to the front paste down. Bloxam was a Warwickshire antiquary and amateur archaeologist, author of the popular work 'The Principles of Gothic Architecture'. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. A small amount of loss to the head of the spine, and to the rear joint. A few light marks to the boards, mostly to the front board. Light bumping to the extremities. Hinges are starting but firm. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with some scattered spots to the first and last few pages. Good. book.
