An excellent copy. This rare letter of Portuguese Jesuit missionary Froes, dated at Nagasaki December 13, 1596, is addressed to Padre Claudio Acquaviva, General of the Society. It was translated into Italian by another Jesuit, Francesco Mercati. The relation gives a detailed regional description of affairs in Japan in the 1590s, by which time the predominantly Jesuit Christian mission in Japan had made considerable progress. However, the position was one of great uncertainty, for by the mid 1590s, Franciscans had arrived from the Philippines and the Japanese felt that they were preparing the way for the conquest of Japan. Torn between their desire for trade and their distaste of the behaviour of foreigners, the Japanese were soon provoked and the ruler, Hideyoshi, ordered the execution of many Christians, including six Franciscans, seventeen of their Japanese neophytes and (by mistake) three Japanese Jesuit lay brothers at Nagasaki in February 1597. A respite followed, but in 1613 persecution was resumed, this time on a systematic basis, culminating in the destruction of the Christian mission by 1640. The Padua edition only at Harvard. Newberry, University of Kansas, and Boston College have the Rome edition by Zanetti, printed in the same year. Not in Cordier or Adams.

Barzeo dans son voyage aux Indes en 1548. Froes acquit bientôt à Goa une grande réputation par son zèle, son savoir et son intelligence. Après une mission d'une année à Malacca, il revint à Goa, et en 1563 fut envoyé au Japon : ses succès évangéliques l'y suivirent. En 1565 il avait déjà baptisé une soixantaine de bonzes à Omura ; mais ce fut surtout à Miaco qu'il fit le plus de prosélytes malgré de cruelles persécutions exercées de la part des autorités japonaises, qui crurent voir un agent politique sous la robe de l'apôtre catholique. Il fut même exilé à Sacoy, où il continua ses fructueuses prédications. En 1569, le grand général de la couronne Nobunaga lui permit le séjour de Miaco, et l'admit même à soutenir en sa présence une discussion théologique contre les bonzes. Le père Froes demeura victorieux ; mais pour éviter les pièges de ses rivaux, il jugea convenable d'aller porter la parole divine dans la province de Bungo. OCLC only lists 3 copies: at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, at the University of Maastricht and at the Universtity of Minnesota. The only other copy to appear at auction in the last thirty years was sold for £ 7 800 on the 25th of June 1992 by Sotheby's London, that is to say ? 13 000 more than 15 years ago.
