Jean Pontas, uno dei maestri della casistica seicentesca, nato a Saint-Hilaire du Harcouet nel 1638, morto novantenne a Parigi nel 1728, aveva pubblicato nel 1715 il suo famoso Dictionnaire des cas de conscience, la sua opera maggiore, in cui la posizione dell'autore si mantenne equilibrata tra le opposte tendenze del rigorismo e del lassismo. Data la fortuna dell'opera, nel 1733 i due dottori alla Sorbona Lamet e Fromageau dettero alle stampe questa continuazione e integrazione, rivista da Simon Michel Treuvé e curata dall'abate Goujet. Il Lamet, nato nel 1621, morto nel 1691, fu al seguito del Cardinale di Retz in Inghilterra, in Olanda e in Italia e dottore della Sorbona. Il Fromageau, teologo e casuista parigino, morto nel 1705, fu intimo amico del Lamet, con cui aveva profonda affinità di interessi e di gusto, e del quale proseguì le fatiche nella realizzazione della presente opera. Deux volumes in-folio, reliure plein veau de l'époque, dos à six nerfs ornés de caissons fleuronnés dont un de tomaison, pièces de titre fauves, tranches rouges, [4]-VIII-1582 colonnes et [4]-1450-CVIII (table des matières) colonnes (numérotation par colonnes, 2 colonnes par page). Recueil de cas de conscience composé à partir des consultations et des décisions des deux casuistes et docteurs de Sorbonne, Lamet (1621-1691) et Fromageau (1640-1705) et qui réunit, par articles classés par ordre alphabétique, les principaux points de morale chrétienne, auxquels peuvent être confrontés les clercs, notamment en confession, et les laïcs. Chaque article est composé d'une dissertation sur le sujet, suivis de cas pratiques sous forme de questions, de réponses et de jurisprudences. Les réponses sont étayées par l'interprétation des Ecritures, les décrets des conciles, la doctrine des Pères, l'autorité du droit canonique, la coutume. Cette théologie morale appliquée représente une source importante pour l'histoire des mentalités, des relations entre morale et pratique sociale et plus largement de la constitution d'une conscience individuelle. Les articles liés à la sexualité et au mariage (adultère, baiser, devoir conjugal, mariage, dispense et empêchement, scandale, débauches.) de ce type de dictionnaire ont souvent été cités, parfois en dehors de tout contexte. L'important, y compris en pagination, semble ailleurs, avec l'objectif affiché de "proscrire du commerce l'injustice et l'usure, de l'Eglise la simonie, le défaut de résidence des Bénéficiers, et la dissipation des biens ecclésiastiques".Les articles (chanoine, confession, messe, ordres, pauvreté religieuse, Prémontrez, religieux-religieuses, simonie, bénéfice, voeu.) consacrés à la pratique et la vie religieuse tiennent une place essentielle et sont une source intéressante pour l'histoire de l'institution ecclésiastique et du sentiment religieux de l'époque.
