Nice copy. ?This volume is devoted especially to the water systems, both civil a…nd military, in the northern provinces of the Roman Empire; but it contains also thematic essays on baths, building techniques, and hygiene. In what is called a ?Bildanhang? examples of an even wider variety of water systems in Europe and N. Africa are also succinctly described, and depicted, in alphabetical order from Aix-en-Provence to Segovia. Whatever the interest of the essays, it is this mass of information which gives the volume unique value. The whole production (?) is of exemplary standard. Highly professional and scholarly though it is, the aim has been to make the astonishing achievements of antiquity in the management of water understandable, and accessible to the interested layman.? Nice copy. ?The Frontanus-Gesellschaft is a group composed for the most part of West German engineers and other profession…als in the fields of hydraulic technology or pipelines who are interested in the technology of ancient water-supply systems. The organisation was founded to foster research and publication in the history of hydraulic technology, pipelines, and sources of energy. (?) ?Geschichte der Wasserversorgung? has focused so far on the Graeco-Roman world. The purpose of the series is the publication of technical information on the discovery, transport, storage, and division of water in antiquity, in a form accessible to the general reader but technically and historically correct. In this the organisation and the authors have succeeded admirably. (?) The volume presents in a clear and reliable form examples of some important monuments, and analyses of portions of the literary and inscriptional evidence and of social function. (?)
