Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Full blue leather binding by Hatchards of Piccadilly, and EXTREMELY rare due to the War Economy production of the time. Spine has five raised bands, gilt lettering. Board edges are ruled in gilt, gilt ruled turn ins. Very slight staining to covers. Top edge gilt. Previous owner's bookplate to front endpaper. Very solid binding with no loose pages, a few small spots of foxing but text is generally very clean throughout. Overall condition is Very Good. The first printing of the first edition of this novel, set in the world of rubber production. The author was best known for Grand Hotel, one of the biggest selling novels of its day, and made into a brilliant film. Very rare indeed to find this work in a leather binding. War economy production standards meant that books quickly deteriorated, and perhaps this one was especially bound to preserve it. Beautiful writer, equally adept in English and German, Vicki Baum was also hugely popular. Her books are well worth a read. This is a genuinely rare copy, possibly unique. Title in gilt on red morocco label affixed to spine, five raised bands with gilt ruling. Handmade endpapers. Solid text block, small bump to bottom of spine. Faint damp stain to frontispiece, usual toning to leaves. A near fine example in a fine binding. Complete with 48 illustrations, including a frontispiece with tissue guard and three fold-out maps. Map of South Africa with archival repairs to center fold, others near fine.

Marbled endpapers with decorative gilt turn-ins and board edges. Bound by Bayntun of Bath, England. Solid binding, clean text with no marks or notations. Joints rubbed and beginning to split at ends. Housed in a tan cloth slipcase. (Gallatin & Oliver 8) A very attractive copy of this satire on undergraduate life at Oxford. Max Beerbohm was an English essayist and caricaturist. Zuleika Dobson was the only novel he ever published. The Modern Library Board selected it as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.
