Housed in a prestation bag to prevent further damage. Extremities a little rubbed looking but very clean and fresh. Ex-libris plate of Charles Stirling on front paste down page. Brown end papers. Inscribed in pencil by AWF Fuller, brother of JFC Fuller and, no doubt, a descendant of the author, from whose collection the book was acquired. Helpfully AWF has provided inforamation in his description about the book. It reads: "This is similar to the edit. of 1816 but with a different title page and publishers (see my copy). I have a second copy in boards, unopened as issued." On the title page the title and author are in red print with the rest being in black print. Otherwise the condition is very sound with a touch of foxing. Lovely book with great provenance.

(scn) ~Thomas Fuller (1654-1734), an English physician noted for his researchinto smallpox and inoculation and three books of prescription("Pharmacopoeia"), was also an avid collector of adages and precepts.This collection consists of 1761 adages collected as guidance for hisson, John, as "an everlasting Legacy: and upon my Blessings I charge youto keep them as a Treasure; consult them at every turn, and make best useyou can of them all your Days." (Introduction). Most of the preceptsare taken from psalms, proverbs and gospels, with one chosen as asubtitle: "Be ye Wise as Serpents, and Harmless as Doves." This is thefirst appearance of "Directions, Counsels and Cautions" which waspublished again in 1727 as " Introductio ad Prudentiam", in 2 volumeswith over 3,000 adages and precepts.

Bound in original calf with decorated blind stamped panels; spine divided into compartments by raised bands, with recent paper label. Some wear to extremities and hinges weak. A little worming of endpapers confined to edges. Some browning and staining but otherwise fine condition. An English edition of a Pharmacopoeia first published in Latin in 1701. It is arranged by remedy, with a catalogue of medicines at the beginning and an index of ailments, referring to the remedies at the end. Many are herbally based, but Fuller employs some unusual ingredients, e.g.' A Cephalic Infusion. Take dry Peacocks Dung (the white part) 4 Ounces; Millipedes alive bruis'd 1 Ounce.It cleanses out the Meatus of the Brain, when choak'd up and grown unpassable by reason of muddy Feculencies; roborates its Tone when flaccid and sunk; .refreshes and invigorates. when feeble and fainting; discusses the Mists and Clouds of the Head, and procures Serenity and Sun-shine.' Another remedy requires the use of beetles and minced eel-skins. In his preface to the physicians, Fuller uses equally robust language to condemn the contemporary practice of dedicating books to the great and the good: 'that which scandalizes me most of all is, to see an Author with a Panegyrical Dedication in his Hand, cringe, and crawl after a Purse-proud Citizen, or self-seeking Courtier, in hopes of a gracious Nod; now and then a Dinner; perhaps a Gratuity; or a Promise of helping him (if he wait long enough) into some petty Place of Profit.' Dr. Thomas Fuller (1654-1734) was born in Sussex and educated at Queens' College, Cambridge, being admitted to the Royal College of Physicians in 1679 and MD in 1681. He established himself at Sevenoaks, Kent, buying the new Red House and drawing some of his practice from wealthy invalids visiting Tunbridge Wells. Fuller published three Pharmacopoeia in his lifetime and this Extemporanea was also published in a new Latin edition in the same year, 1714.
