Hardcover. Condition: Very good. First Edition. Oblong octavo. 48 pages. Green cloth hardcover with title and borders in black on the front cover. Illustrated with photographs and numerous sketches. Light edge wear to the cloth extremities. Previous owner name of Edw. W. Fischer written on the right front flyleaf. Laid inside the rear cover is an illustration titled "Outpost Position" split cleanly and evenly in half. On the blank rear end paper are two inscriptions. The first in pencil states "Last book I bound." The second inscription located in back is lengthy and interesting - "March 23 1918 Bound this book this a.m. 1421 Walmit. Weather fine. Germans began their much advertised offensive yesterday and still at it today. Have every confidence that the line will hold. Losses in material & territory are to be expected. If the line can be held till Spring '19 the Germans will be whipped. Gen Del (sp.?) Windoms (sp.?) R. Z 830 P.M." Written below the inscription appears to be some sort of code? No information found searching the internet on variations of the name inscribed or that of Edw. W. Fischer the name found on the front paste down. From wikipedia: The 1918 Spring Offensive or Kaiserschlacht (Kaiser's Battle), also known as the Ludendorff Offensive, was a series of German attacks along the Western Front during the First World War, beginning on 21 March 1918, which marked the deepest advances by either side since 1914. The Germans had realised that their only remaining chance of victory was to defeat the Allies before the overwhelming human and matériel resources of the United States could be fully deployed.
