It's a thrilling, firsthand account of the author's experiences navigating the rugged terrain of the American West, where he encountered a wide range of Native American tribes. Unlike other travelogues of the era that often romanticized the native inhabitants, this book presents a more realistic and nuanced portrait, highlighting both the brutal realities and the often overlooked virtues of these people. The author, a veteran fur trader, skillfully interweaves his own adventures with vivid descriptions of the customs and traditions of the various tribes he encountered. His descriptions of Indian life are particularly noteworthy, providing detailed insights into their social structures, warfare, hunting practices, and religious beliefs. The book also touches on the complex relationship between the fur traders and the Native Americans, highlighting the often -violent clashes caused by the influx of European goods and the disruption of traditional ways of life. Through captivating anecdotes and detailed observations, the author paints a vivid picture of a bygone era, offering valuable insights into the rich tapestry of life on the American frontier and the evolving relationship between Native Americans and the encroaching forces of European civilization. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Blue cloth, title in gilt on spine. From a limited edition of 520 copies, as stated on limitation page. Complete with frontispiece fold-out map and five additional illustrations. Some foxing to endpapers, scattered foxing throughout text block. Text block stable. Lacking the scarce dust jacket. (Howes L264aa) (Currey & Kruska 235) (Rader 2217). This work was reprinted from the scarce 1839 account of Zenas Leonard's firsthand description of the Joseph Reddeford Walker expedition to California. Zenas Leonard (1809-1857) was an American frontiersman, explorer, and fur trapper. Leonard joined a fur-trading expedition in 1831 that took him across the Rocky Mountains, where he spent several years trapping, trading, and living among Native American tribes. His detailed journal offers one of the earliest firsthand accounts of life in the American West, describing encounters with tribes such as the Crow, Blackfeet, and Nez Perce, as well as the hardships of overland travel, survival, and hunting.
