These two small hard cover books (5 ½ x 8 inches, Volume I- 303 pp. & Volume II- 318 plus a long, fold-out map of the River) was published by Henry T. Coates & Co. of Philadelphia, dated 1899 and a New Edition, Revised and Corrected. The books are bound in red cloth with gorgeous gilt decorations and titles on cover and spine. Each volume has a captioned, tissue-guarded Frontispiece and more than 20 other similarly protected, full-page, b&w photo plates. The photos are exceptionally sharp and clear. The top edges of the pages are gilt and there is a red satin page marker tipped in to each volume. The fold-out map is the width of a page height and more than 20 inches long, a masterpiece itself. Condition: These books are in near fine condition; someone has cared for them carefully over the years or simply not read them. The hard covers are bright and handsome with some tiny black specks in the gutters, nothing even really noticeable. Inside there is a period neat bookplate of the former owners on the front endpaper of each volume. The interior pages and plates are pristine, without toning or foxing of any kind. The fold-out map too is pristine. All hinges are intact and the bindings are tight, sound and square. These books are not ex-library or remainders. Language: ENG.
