Sorprendido desde niño por los clichés que oía tanto en su Líbano natal como en Francia, donde se educó, Georges Corm decidió descifrar la alquimia misteriosa que, en las distintas sociedades, acaba imponiendo una manera miope e irracional de ver al «Otro», fruto de imágenes arquetípicas…, sobre todo de origen religioso. Ahora, cuando muchos han querido ver en los acontecimientos del 11-S la confirmación de una hostilidad milenaria entre Oriente y Occidente en suma, un «choque de civilizaciones», Corm defiende la idea de que se trata en realidad de una «fractura imaginaria», fruto de esos clichés y esas ideas recibidas, que por añadidura ocultan oportunamente muchos y muy profanos intereses. A su juicio, a lo largo del siglo xix se impuso el tópico de un Oriente místico, arcaico e irracional frente a un Occidente materialista, racionalista e individualista, aceptado también por los intelectuales árabes, que reprodujeron el mismo esquema. Sin compasión con ellos, Corm tampoco ahorra críticas al falso laicismo del pensamiento occidental contemporáneo, fundado sobre valores de origen religioso, imprudentemente mezclados con confusas teorías raciales sobre la jerarquía de los pueblos, las naciones y las civilizaciones. En los últimos años, las pasiones generadas por el 11-S, la renovada tragedia palestino-israelí y la fe ciega en los beneficios de la globalización han contribuido a neutralizar el pensamiento crítico que hubiera debido reaccionar ante esa evolución.
