"Old Creole Days" is classic fiction depicting the history and social and romantic life in the South with all its graces and its tensions. This is a First Edition Early Printing by author George Washington Cable who fought for the South in the Civil War before he began publishing articles and books. It was first published in 1879 by Charles Scribner's Sons as is this edition as noted on the title and copyright pages.(shown in photos 5 & 6). It has decorative cover cloth, decorative boards and endpapers. Now here comes an interesting plot point; There is a signature in photo 10 that could have a great deal of historic meaning; The name Hooper had famous people during the Civil War, Reconstruction, and post-re construction periods up until about the early 1900's. There was a famous civil war captain who fought for the 33rd infantry in the Southern states named Charles Wesley Hooper whose age coincided with the timing of this book publication and incidentally was married to a Mary Hooper whom he eventually widowed. You'll notice the signature appears to have been put down by the husband wishing his wife(likely Maryann or Maryanne) all the best upon him giving this SCARCE edition to her on their wedding day! From my research I have discovered there are likely 1000 copies or less and possibly as few as 100 copies! Authenticating the signature is the missing part here but the price is worth its weight in gold in just the true rarity of the first editions of this novel but if you purchase the book and can authenticate that it is one of the famous Hooper's(could also be the husband of author Mary Ann Margaret Hooper a,k.a Mary Hooper!) then you have a book that could be worth a lot more than I'm selling it for! Please check the photos and ask questions. Condition: "GD(Good)-Covers have some bumps, abrasions, and denting as well as some staining and/or soiling. Also, the spine and binding have some bowing. The spine also has some splitting but everything is fully intact! The interior pages are off-white with tanning, fading, and foxing. There are no loose or missing pages. Overall, the book retains decent presentation.
