Dr. Francis Pendleton Gaines (1892-1963) was a historian, president of Wake Forest University, and later the president of Washington and Lee University (1930 to 1959). The recipient of this book, Percy Hampton Johnston (1881-1957), was president of Chemical Bank from 1920-1946. Johnston's portrait hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. Signed.
