This book examines a collection of letters published in the Scotsman newspaper in the 1870s which challenged prevailing assumptions about the Enlightenment-era Scottish poet Robert Burns. The author, Aliquanto Latior, a contemporary of Burns's time, expresses doubt about the truth of a story told by literary critic Alexander Taylor Innes about the adverse influence of a minister on Burns's religious views. Innes asserts that an unnamed minister advised Burns to abandon religious themes in his poetry, and that this had a strongly negative impact on Burns's life. Latior contends that Burns's own testimony and other evidence contradict this account. He also suggests that the account and others like it may have originated from biases against the Moderate party in the Church of Scotland and that some of the people who have been presented as victims of Burns's satire were in fact morally compromised. The author concludes that the received narrative of Burns's life should be revised in light of this new evidence. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
