John Galt was a renowned Scottish novelist and essayist, admired for his depiction of country life and for his notable use of local Scots dialect in order to create vivid and subtle social landscapes. This set is copiously illustrated throughout by the renowned English line artistâ and book illustrator, Charles Edmund Brock. Brock was a prolific illustrator in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, producingworks for such renowned authors as Jonathan Swift, William Thackeray, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and George Eliot. This set contains the following works: 'Annals of the Parish' in two volumes. 'Sir Andrew Wylie of that Ilk' in two volumes. 'The Entail: or the Lairds of Grippy', in two volumes. 'Ringan Gilhaize: or The Covenanters', in two volumes. 'The Last of the Lairds'. 'The Provost'. 'Annals of the Parish' features a fascinating memoir of John Galt by the renowned editor David Storrar Meldrum, and an introduction by the Scottish novelist Samuel Rutherford Crockett. Collated, complete with: Nine black and white plates to 'Annals of the Parish' volume I, and nine black and white plates to volume II. Four plates to 'Sir Andrew Wylie of that Ilk' volume I, and four plates to volume II. Four plates to 'The Entail: or the Lairds of Grippy' volume I, and four plates to volume II. Four plates to 'Ringan Gilhaize: or The Covenanters' volume I, and four plates to volume II. Four plates to 'The Last of the Lairds'. Four plates to 'The Provost'. This set is lacking the original dustwrappers. In the publisher's original uniform cloth binding, with gilt title to spines. Externally excellent, with slight bumping to extremities and head and tail of spines. Prior owner's ink inscription to front pastedown of each volume. Offsetting to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages very slightly age toned to extremities, but very bright and clean throughout. Small mark to upper fore edge of page 20 'The Last of the Lairds' and offset to facing text, not affecting text. Very Good Indeed. book.
