In 1825, the boat went to the Upper Mississippi following its purchase by Captain David G. Bates, of Galena, Illinois. As early as 1819 Captain Bates had moved lead in keelboats from Galena, and was engaged in the smelting business at Dubuque and in the Indian trade. Captain Bates chartered the Putnam to the U. S. government to carry troop supplies, and the boat reached Fort Snelling on April 5, 1825. She was the third steamboat to ascend the rapids and reach Fort Crawford, now Prairie du Chien, and Fort Snelling, the earlier ones having been the Virginia and the General Neville.".
