Noting that from the beginning of the excavations at Pompeii in 1748 'to the present day, no [substantial] work has appeared in the English language upon the subject of its domestic antiquities', together with architect and fellow countryman John P. Gandy he first published Pompeiana to help detail important findings that had been made by the excavators in the first two decades of the nineteenth century. To this end they provide historical discussion, analysis, and over 75 plates illustrating various points of archaeological interest including, as their subtitle notes, 'the topography, edifices, and ornaments of Pompeii'. Pompeiana is an important work that helped open the excavations to English readers and created further awareness of the treasures of the doomed city, destroyed by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Illustrated Edition. POMPEII ITS DESTRUCTION AND RE-DISCOVERY DRAWINGS & ENGRAVINGS 1880s ? I am pleased to offer a large and especially prepared book titled: Pompeii- Its Destruction and Re-Discovery with Engravings and Descriptions of the Arts and Architecture of Its Inhabitants by Sir William Gell and J. P. Gandy. This very large hard cover book (9 x 12 x 2, unpaginated including 24 pages of text and 70 plates with tissue-guards) was apparently imported by R. Worthington of New York, no dated found but research suggests the 1880s . The book is bound in light brown cloth boards with bevel edges and gilt and black decorations and titles on the cover and spine. Each of the plates has a tissue-guard and a separate facing page with a brief description of the contents of the plate. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are bumped at the corners and spine tips including some fraying of the lower right-hand corner. The boards are also dust-dulled and the gilt a bit tarnished. Inside, the book is unmarked but there are many pages with foxing, typically those adjacent to the tissue-guard of the plates. There are also some pages without foxing. Both hinges (reinforced) are intact but the binding is cracked in each case front & back- somewhere nearby. The binding feels a bit loose but is hanging together. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
