Title printed below the right image on the board. "Garcin Photographe a Geneve." printed on left edge on front of the board. Auguste Garcin (1816-1895) was a Swiss photographer based in Geneva who often photographed scenic view of cities and nature. He won several awards at various art exhibitions for his photographic work.

Add to basket22.5 x 13.5 cm, montée sur carton (39 x 26.5 cm). Un précieux document de l?état du glacier vers 1870. Aujourd?hui, au même endroit, il ne reste qu?une moraine. La Mer de Glace est le deuxième plus important glacier des Alpes, après le glacier d'Aletsch. En longueur, ce glacier est toutefois devancé, outre le glacier d'Aletsch,…par le glacier de Fiesch situé en Suisse. La Mer de Glace présente un attrait touristique certain: les touristes peuvent y accéder aisément grâce au chemin de fer du Montenvers inauguré en 1909. Le site du Montenvers, situé un peu en amont de la langue terminale du glacier, offre un excellent point de vue sur la Mer de Glace. Aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, le glacier descendait jusque dans la vallée, au niveau du village des Bois. Pour cette raison, il se nommait glacier des Bois, appellation qui subsiste encore parfois de nos jours. Notons toutefois que le glacier des Bois désignait surtout la partie du glacier qui s'épanchait dans la vallée. En 1741, deux voyageurs britanniques, William Windham et Richard Pococke se rendent au Montenvers, et baptisent du nom de Mer de Glace la partie « haute » du glacier. Aujourd'hui, la partie « basse » du glacier a complètement disparu. L'épaisseur du glacier était également beaucoup plus importante. Cela permettait de le traverser assez facilement au niveau du Montenvers, pour atteindre l'autre rive (droite), aujourd'hui rendue beaucoup plus difficile d'accès. On y faisait même passer des troupeaux, qui rejoignaient ainsi ses alpages situés en contrebas de l'aiguille Verte et des Drus, via un passage escarpé sur la rive droite, appelé Mauvais Pas ou Maupas. À l'heure actuelle, le glacier perd, chaque année, de 4 à 6 mètres d'épaisseur et une trentaine de long. Entre 1905 et 2005, la mer de Glace a perdu 120 m d'épaisseur.Photographe genevois important du XIXème siècle, mais quasiment oublié, Auguste Garcin est surtout actif dans le domaine de la photographie touristique, produisant des vues des sites les plus visités de Suisse, Savoie et du Midi de la France L?ensemble, ainsi que la mer, font partie du circuit touristique européen emprunté par les classes bourgeoises enrichies grâce au commerce et à l'industrie, à une époque où le chemin de fer a réduit les distances sur le continent.
