A graphic and absorbing account of life in the Arctic for the author, a doctor to the Distant Early Warning Line, more widely known as the DEW line. This consisted of a chain of radar stations that were linked across 600,000 square miles of the Arctic. His base was on Baffin Island, where he ran a small, fairly primitive hospital. When patients were ill he flew to treat them, and also answered distress calls from Eskimos. acting as both dentist and vet to their huskies. This gave him the raw material for this account of life in the Arctic, . its people, wild life, birds and seal hunting.
