Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the climatic variations and conditions of the Pacific coast region of North America. The book covers the western interior climate and the fertile northern tier of the region, discussing the causes of diversity of climate and how the distribution of solar heat and ear…th's movements affect the region's weather patterns. The author delves into the influence of mountain chains on local climates and the role of the Gulf Stream and Japan current in modifying temperatures. Concluding with a discussion of moisture, rainfall, and the arid region, this book provides valuable insights into the factors shaping the climate of the Pacific coast and its implications for human settlement and agriculture. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Signed in Arnoldâs hand in pencil: âA. Guyotâ to upper corner of front wrap.Selucius Garfielde (1822 - 1883) was a lawyer, politician, and Delegate to the US House of Representatives from the Territory of Washington from 1869 to 1873, who had played a direct role in the creating of the Idaho Territory. He also had various interests outside of politics, for he was a co-owner of the Coal Creek Road Company and several gambling parlors, among other things. The current pamphlet contained the condensed version of a lecture Garfielde had delivered, subtopics of which included climate of the Northwest, California irrigation, causes of the diversity of climate, etc.The previous owner of the pamphlet, Arnold Henry Guyot (1807 - 1884), was a Swiss - American geologist and geographer. He would begin the first systematic instruction in geology at Princeton University in 1855 and would found what is today known as the Princeton Museum of Natural History in 1856. Several landmarks have been named after him, including the Guyot Crater on the Moon, Guyot Glacier in Alaska, and three different Mt. Guyot peaks in the White Mountains, the Colorado Rockies, and the Great Smokey Mountains. 2.

Two mellowed horizontal folds, and two closed tears on right margin, one measuring 1" and the other measuring 0.5", else Near Fine. A letter of approximately 900-words from Garfielde to Hon. J. W. Nesmith (then-US Senator from Or…egon) attempting to influence Nesmith toward securing an appointment for General Winlock Miller as Superintendent of Indian Affairs for Washington Territory. A notable Washington Territory imprint, the printing was transcribed to print from a "true copy, in the possession of a Republican in Olympia, W. T." and was published November 6, 1869 by the Republican party in an attempt to exploit the political differences of Garfielde and Arthur Denny, and their parties. Garfielde, according to Phoebe Goodell Judson, in her fine memoir A Pioneer's Search for an Ideal Home, declares Garfielde "silver-tongued." A fine example of bare-knuckle frontier politics, and a rare example of territorial printing. An OCLC search reveals four institutional holdings. Not in SMITH or SOLIDAY. This broadside is now housed in a removable, clear, archival sleeve with acid-free backing.
