B&W photos. Roland Philipps (1890-1916) was an early Boy Scout Leader. The movement was founded by Baden-Powell in 1908, and Philipps became part of the organisation as a Scout Leader shortly after this. In 1912 he was appointed assistant district commissioner for East London. He established the Hackney Lectures on Scout Law with Stanley Ince, and wrote several books about scouting. He was killed in action in 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He was awarded the Military Cross. This book contains recollections of Philipps by friends and colleagues from the Scouting movement, along with pieces about Scouting written by Philipps that were not included in the original edition.
