No dustjacket, Brown ornate printed/decorated hardback binding with foliage design, brown cloth the hinges and spine with faded gilt titles. Wear to spine-end with small frays, heavy wear to boards' corners which are worn round and through to card below. Wear/rubbing to edges, page-edges are a little darkened with age. Ink name to flyleaf, end-papers a little browned. Ex libris sticker to rear inner board. Light paper cracks to inner hinges. A few slight foxing marks to some page-margins, but pages overall are clean. Binding sound. A nice copy despite the wear, may be 1884 or after, looks late Victorian.

Some light spots to front board, light marks to back board, spine-ends and boards' corners rubbed. FLYLEAF HAS BEEN REMOVED. Light browning to endpapers & prelims o/w contents clean and in nice condition.

Condition: Very Good. 1883, 8vo, original publisher's grey cloth with floral decoration in dark brown and gilt, lettered on gilt panels on upper cover and spine, all edges gilt, green patterned endpapers, 764 pages. Coloured frontispiece by Richard Andre, 2 black and white illustrations by him to The Poet and the Brook by Mrs Ewing. Numerous other black and white illustrations by Randolph Caldecott and Gordon Browne and others. Authors include Mrs Molesworth and Mrs Ewing. Child's name in ink on upper cover, spine gilt dull, head and tail of spine and corners very slightly worn, tiny nick to cloth at tail, a little spotting to cloth, especially on lower cover. Child has quite neatly painted in the dress on the frontispiece and 1 other text illustration, title page reinserted and chipped, slightly torn, slightly foxed and dusty along edges, no loss of text. Gilbert & Others (illustrator). 1st Edition. 2 volumes boud as 1. 1st volume "Christmas" has VI pp + 378 pages & 35 woodcut illustrations and plates the May-Day volume has Iv pp + 380 pages & 32 illustrations, contents are clean and good + or better, the half calf leather binding is discoloured and worn in appearance, but all firm, the plain cloth boards are handled, endpapers show boards at gutter. Octavo size. *NOTE* These 2 volumes have an article and a 1st printing story by Lewis Carroll, one on "Croquet for 4's "Castle Croquet" and is a 1st printing as is "Bruno's Revenge" in volume 2, this was expanded into the book "Sylvie and Bruno" of 1889 and is a lovely fairy-story. Other 1st edition tales are by Hans Christian Andersen, (lots of fairy and fairy-land stories by him and others) Agnes Strickland, Caroline Peachey (Sometime translator of Hans Andersen), nature articles by the Rev J. G. Wood (Of whom I was once told by a member of the "World About Us" BBC team his description of the diving bell spider was spot on with his descriptions and they had spent 6 months filming in soggy wet marshes getting the same information over 100 years later).
