The fifth and final report of the Ohio Vicksburg Battlefield Commission to the Governor of Ohio about the Ohio monuments at the Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi, which is still open to this day. The Ohio Vicksburg Battlefield Commission was appointed by the late Governor of Ohio, George K. Nash, "to locate the positions occupied by the several Ohio commands on or near the investment line during the siege of Vicksburg, and to mark such locations with suitable monuments and assault markers ." The contents of this book include the following subjects: transmittal letter of the report; concise history of the capture of Vicksburg from November 29, 1862 to July 4, 1863; summary of casualties in the Union Army and Confederate Army from March 29 to July 4, 1863; list of Union and Confederate troops by state who participated in the Vicksburg campaign and siege; historical records of the Ohio troops by regiment and battery who participated in the campaign and siege; Vicksburg National Military Park; appointment of the Ohio Vicksburg Battlefield Commission; preliminary work of the commission including the purchase of monuments; dedication of the Ohio monuments at the Vicksburg National Military Park; and financial statement of the commission. The Siege of Vicksburg was the final battle of the Vicksburg campaign during the Civil War. The siege marked a turning point in the war and was instrumental in the Confederacy's defeat.
