Paperback. Condition: Good. A Dynamic Account of Religion's Central Role in American History The narrative charts the nation's spiritual landscape across five centuries, opening with diverse Native American traditions and the earliest Spanish and French missions. Colonial settlements, revolutionary assemblies, and nineteenth-century revivals reveal how theological disputes repeatedly shaped the political order and prompted historic breakthroughs in religious liberty. Historians Edwin Scott Gaustad and Leigh Eric Schmidt examine the fractured debates surrounding slavery, civil rights, and modern pluralism, documenting how competing convictions continue to redefine public life. Colonial Era: Follow the distinct trajectories of Anglican Virginia, Puritan Massachusetts, and Roger Williams's Rhode Island haven as rival settlements established contrasting models of faith and governance. African American Religious History: Explore how enslaved and free believers built autonomous spiritual institutions, tracing the rise of independent congregations from South Carolina's Silver Bluff to Richard Allen's Bethel Church in Philadelphia. New Religious Movements: Examine nineteenth-century utopian experiments and homegrown traditions, including Mother Ann Lee's celibate Shakers, John Humphrey Noyes's Oneida community, and Joseph Smith's Latter-day Saints. Constitutional Battles: Unpack landmark legal clashes over religious freedom and establishment, analyzing Jehovah's Witnesses challenging mandatory flag salutes alongside Supreme Court rulings on school prayer and peyote rituals.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. The founder of Rhode Island and of the first Baptist Church in America, an original and passionate advocate for religious freedom, a rare New England colonist who befriended Native Americans and took seriously their culture and their legal rights, Roger Williams is the forgotten giant among the first English colonists. Now, Edwin S. Gaustad, a leading expert on the life of Roger Williams, offers a vividly written and authoritative biography of the most far-seeing of the early settlers--the first such biography written for a general audience. Readers follow Roger and Mary Williams on their 1631 journey to Boston, where he soon became embroiled in many controversies, most notably, his claim that the colonists had unjustly taken Native American lands and his argument that civil authorities could not enforce religious duties. Soon banished for these troubling (if farsighted) views, Williams wandered for fourteen weeks in bitter snow until he bought land from the Narragansett Indians and founded Providence, which soon became a sanctuary for religious freedom and a refuge for dissenters of all stripes. The book discusses Williams' journey back to London, where he sought legal recognition of his colony, spread his enlightened views on Native Americans, and (alongside John Milton) fought passionately for religious freedom. Gaustad also describes how the royal charter of Rhode Island, obtained by Williams in 1663, would become the blueprint of religious freedom for many other colonies and a foundation stone for the First Amendment. Here then is a vibrant portrait of a great American who is truly worthy of remembrance.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Should prayer be allowed in public schools? Should biology be taught according to Darwin or to the book of Genesis? Why is polygamy against the law? These are just a few of the questions that touch our lives directly and emerge out of the separation of church and state. In this volume, one of the most distinguished scholars of American religious history traces the complicated relationship of church and state from the early colonial period, through the unique American experiment in religious liberty after the Revolution, to the ongoing debate over religious issues in our schools and communities. Edwin Gaustad relates entertaining and edifying accounts of headline-grabbing court trials involving polygamy, witchcraft, and church taxation. He quotes moving passages from the speeches and writings of American Presidents and Supreme Court justices to prove that, to paraphrase Michelangelo, religious liberty is made up of a series of trifles, but religious liberty is no trifle. General Editors: Jon Butler and Harry S. Stout, both at Yale University Religion in American Life explores the evolution, character, and dynamics of religion in America from 1500 to the present day. Written by distinguished religious historians, these books weave together the varying stories that compose the religious fabric of the United States, from Puritanism to alternative religious practices. Primary source material coupled with handsome illustrations and lucid text make these books essential in any exploration of Americas diverse nature. Each book includes a chronology, suggestions for further reading, and index.…
