Giuseppe Gazzeri (Firenze, 1771-1847) compì gli studi in legge presso l'Università di Pisa, ove si laureò nel 1795. Lasciata la carriera forense, si dedicò interamente agli studi scientifici, attratto in particolare dalle ricerche dei chimici francesi. Nel 1807 fu nominato professore di chimica del Liceo di Scienze Fisiche e Naturali di Firenze. Passò in seguito alla Scuola di Farmacia presso l'Ospedale di S. Maria Nuova, dove insegnò a lungo. Fu Commissario generale della Magona e Miniere della Toscana. Propose inoltre la perforazione dei terreni boraciferi nella zona di Larderello per attivare nuovi soffioni.
