Two Japanese photograph albums containing a total of 183 black and white photographs. Some photographs have been removed, one leaf cut in two presumably to remove another photograph/s and four photographs have been intriguingly, deliberately damaged. Two photographs loosely inserted. Some photographs are chipped and there is some silvering evident on a number of the photographs. The two albums are roughly the same size: 16.2 x 25.4cm and 18.6 x 26.8cm. Both are worn and one is bound in black leather with ribbon ties and the other in pictorial Japanese fabric with cord ties. Card leaf in the leather bound album has been repaired at hinge with modern cloth tape not affecting the photographs. Although both albums are well worn they offer very interesting and rarely seen images of the life of maiko and geisha at this time. A set of two intriguing albums of black-and-white photos some showing family scenes, but many depicting geisha and maiko (training geisha), in some cases with their clients. One album, which seems to be a little older than the other (probably dating to the 1910s-1920s), has the words Ono and Miyakoya on the front, suggesting that it was compiled by someone name Ono, who ran an inn or hot spring resort called Miyakoya. This album contains some charming photos of children, an image of man on horseback, and another of a young man in an impressively large motor car, but most of the pictures are of geisha or trainee geisha, some of them looking very young. These include studio portrait photos and pictures of women entertaining male customers at parties, as well as a couple of photos which appear to show people performing in plays. The second album, dating from the 1930s, includes a photo depicting a group of people at the front of a substantial building with a sign reading 'onsen' (hot spring), while another depicts a female entertainer pouring a drink for a military officer. There is a photo of a group of about 30 people including women in geisha attire holding a banner with rising sun flags and an inscription wishing good fortune to the troops of the Imperial Army - possibly part of a celebration seeing soldiers off to the front. Other photos show female entertainers dancing, playing the shamisen or entertaining clients at parties, and playing blind man's bluff, but the album (like the first) also includes pictures of small children: in some cases, family groups with children. There has been some damage to the album. A page in the second album has been cut in half, and in both albums the face of one woman in a group photo has been very deliberately scratched out - was the subject of the photo trying to conceal her identity, or did someone really dislike her? A fascinating insight into the world of prewar geisha.

Black and white woodblock, 24.1 x 28.7cm. Very good copy. This print shows an Englishman, a Russian and a geisha clearly having a lively drinking party. In the middle of the image an English man, named "Metsuchii", is dancing with a fan, to the tune of shamisen played by the geisha, while "Gyaatsu", the Russian is seated on a stool singing and drumming with a chop stick. The accompanying text says, "[They] are having a drinking party and having a great time, singing English and Russian folk songs to the tune of shamisen playing. The songs are recorded on the left." The text in the left upper section explains the meaning of the songs. Russian song translates as: A good [or good-looking] man from "Beitorukumiyako [St. Petersburg?]" in Russia felt happy that he met a young woman but he thought it too bothersome to kiss her. The English lyrics: "It is great that, after coming to this fantastic place all the way from my country, I drink [sake] poured by a beautiful woman by the generous arrangement of the king of that country. It would be even better if I could sleep with her." The text on the lower left section shows the transcriptions into Japanese of the Russia and English songs plus a English song in a dodoitsu [5-7-7-7-5 syllables] form. Unfortunately these words written in hiragana do not make much sense as the Russian and English words so the meaning of the song is unclear.

Colour lithograph poster 54.5 x 38cm. Two closed tears from margin, the largest running 3.5cm into the image, tiny chip and one small hole. Very good. This early 20th century Japanese advertising poster for the face lotion, Hakureisui (meaning literally white beautiful water) features the face of the most popular pin-up girl in Japan in the 1910s - the geisha later known as Teruha ?? . On the poster alongside Teruha is a cartoonesque image of an African (African American?) in a suit, his face double the size of Teruha's, each pointing to the skin of the other - a frightening example of racial stereotyping! Teruha was born as Takaoka Tatsuko ???? in Nara in 1896. Sold by her alcoholic father at the age of 12 into slavery, her fortune changed two years later when she began training as a geisha in Osaka, taking the name of Chiyoha ??? Due to her stunning and unusual looks she quickly became very well known. Over her career she had a number of liasons but probably the best known is her relationship with a playboy and high-end fashion dealer in 1911, as during their break-up she cut off her small finger to prove her love. Because of this scandal, she could not stay in Osaka and moved to Shinbashi, in Tokyo where she became a geisha named Teruha ?? In Shinbashi she was also a very popular and it was here that she became known as the "Nine-finger Geisha". Such was her fame that postcards with her image were published in large quantities and are still collected to this day. Teruha married twice but in both cases the marriage ended badly. Her first marriage to a stock broker brought her to the United States. While in New York she enrolled in a school to learn English where she had an affair with a woman. On her return to Japan the scandal of her affair in America became known and the marriage broke up. She returned to New York, later living also in London and Paris where it is thought she might have had a child. In the 1920s Teruha also appeared as a lead character in a romantic film. In 1935 she became a Buddhist nun at Gio-ji Temple in Kyoto, where it appears she lived happily until her death in 1994. Takegaki, the company which published this advertising poster for their lotion was located in Osaka. It appears the company is no longer in business. The caption on the poster at the lower right translates as: "For a face like this,[use] Hakureisui which removes pimples and makes [the face] white." The Japanese characters found in the frame on the lower left shows names of other medicines produced by this company. As Teruha appears to have her fingers in this image and the company was located in Osaka, it seems highly likely that the poster was produced before Teruha's move to Tokyo in 1911.

AN OBSCURE COLLECTION OF 95 PHOTOGRAPHS . *** **** *** . . A STUNNING ALBUM OF VARIOUS KYOTO GEISHA & MAIKO . . . 105 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS, PRESERVED IN AN ALBUM . . . COLLECTED BY A FOREIGN LADY OF QUALITY . . . IN SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA 1937-1950's . * This is a collection of an outstanding number of superb black & white photographs. The album contains 13 pages with photos on both sides. The last 2 page has a collection of colorful ribbons, threads and textile samples tipped in, from cotton and silk. . * The photographs were collected by a passionate, admirer of the Kyoto Geisha and Maiko. This person also collected Kimono and all accoutrements of the clothing & accessories used by these artistic entertainers. The collector was fascinated with the stunning & elaborate silk Kimono, their myriad of gorgeous designs and patterns. To that end she purchased these Kimono costumes and all of the accompanying articles. The person must remain anonymous at their request. . The photographs were sent from a Japanese agent who represented the Kimono makers association to the collector in Santa Barbara. From the photographs, she purchased a large number of complete "Princess Costumes" including all textile parts, under garments, shoes, Obi sashes, Tabi [socks], Pokkuri [special Geisha/Maiko tall wooden] 'shoes,' Hakama [a kind of 'apron'], paper handkerchief holder, Kimono-clad dolls &c. . The photographs were smartly posed by famous Geisha or Maiko, some were outdoor poses among throngs of admirers, or on walks to temples and places to offer prayers, pavilions along the river and many other places of natural beauty. . *** The photo album begins with a large photograph of the most celebrated Geisha of Kyoto, Ms. Hanaogi. She is dressed in a 1930's Kimono posing before the Japanese Imperial Navy war flag ! This is the largest photograph, 14 x 20.5 cm. . The album continues with many pages, each with from 2 to 5 or more photographs, all held down with NewAce corners. . The photographs were sent by agents with hand-written numbers to help with ordering. Some photos also had additional notes and comments written on the verso. . RIBBON, THREAD, TEXTILE SAMPLES: The last 2 pages contains several examples of colorful ribbons, silk threads, two silk crepes, a large brocade piece with multi-colors and two "Shibori" type dyed swatches. Each ribbon has a tag with numbers. The opposite sides contains photographs. . *** THE PERIOD AND DATING: The photographs are undated, but clearly the earliest are from the late 1930's through the 1940's and 1950's, there are several silver gelatin types. These can be easily recognized as having 'silver' tint or tinge when light is reflected off of them. . *** Silver gelatin types were commonly used from the 1890's through the 1950's, see the link below. . Gelatin silver prints were by far the most common form of black and white photograph from the late 1890's. Still photographs using the silver gelatin method were popular in the 1930's and those 1940s black and white snapshots and real photo postcards more than likely gelatin silver. . *** SIZE OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS: The photographs seem to be from a few standard sizes: 10.5 x 14.5 cm. [4 x 5.75 inches], 8.5 x 11.5 cm. [3.75 x 4.5 inches]. . *** CONDITION: The album is American, with gilt title on the front cover, simply: "PHOTOGRAPHS" in a flowing type face. The covers are pebbled leather, the edges are a bit worn, minor scuffing and the like, typical of an item more than 80 years old. . The black pages are for the most part intact and solidly held fast with a black cord tied at the front. The pages have some of the usual edge wear, closed tears and rubbing. By and large the photographs are held fast and that area of the paper is very firm and solid. . The photographs.
