A collaboration between the Kentucky agrarian writer and Lexington based Southern Gothic photographer. Collects a longform piece of nature writing by Wendell Berry along with 48 black and white plates by Ralph Eugene Meatyard. Both in photo as in writing, the Red River Gorge is observed over a period of one year, through the four seasons. "In 1967 a large portion of this unique area was destined to be drowned under the waters of a manmade lake. From that sense of impending loss has come this book-a union of the talents of a writer and a photographer that is an eloquent testament to the values of this land and its meaning for contemporary man." There is a small tear at the bottom corner of the last page of text where it and its recto were sloppily separated. Freedman A17.1 This is the first printing of about 1500 copies printed at Kingsport via letterpress printing. Mr. Berry has told me that he believes that fewer than 50 copies were signed by both he and Gene Meatyard. Evidently they did only a couple of book signings and of course, neither he nor Gene Meatyard were as famous as they are today.
