Trade Paperback. Condition: Good. Second Edition. 270 Pages Indexed. Heavy highlighting throughout entire book. With the end of the Cold War, and the prospect of federal Europe, this is a time to reassess the processes by which postwar Europe was reborn. How each western European country constructed its own version of the affluent society and the welfare state. Out of the devastation of 1945 is the subject of this ambitious study. The author gives an account of the practicalities of reconstruction - how it was done, what it cost, who paid for it and what they hoped to receive. He throws light on the distance between the wartime dream of Europe. He also makes clear how it was possible that, devastated by two world wars capitalism in Europe could recover within a decade to flourish as never before. This book examines the issues for the subsequent history of Europe. How was it possible for the ruined nations of 1945 to keep up ever more costly defences in the Cold War and yet carry through a revolution in welfare and consumption? As the more prosperous part of Europe became ever more dependent on the United States, how did the comprehensive projection of American power influence the reorganisation? In synthesising the main political, strategic and economic developments from 1945 to the mid-50s, the author makes use of recent research to test older interpretations of the period. He shows that more was changing than just the economy. Progress was defined more in economic terms. It set the terms for competition with the Soviet system, and ushered in the era of the economic miracles. The author is Associate Professor of International History at the University of Bologna, Italy. Hardcover. 125 p.; 20 cm. (Seabury paperbacks ; SP 16) `The opening chapter was.an attempt to see the general missionary task of the Church in a threefold context--as an unfinished geographical enterprise, as a still largely-unexplored psychological frontier, and as something with a cosmic dimension. I tried to interpret these in terms of the Pauline triad--Faith, Hope, and Charity. An invitation to address the Annual Conference of Principals of Theological Colelges in 1962 afforded the occasion for a study of how to help candidates for the Ministry to gain a true perspective about the Mission of the Church during their preparation for ordination. This study is comprised in chapter five.' Good lt. spotted in orig. green wrapper.

He was allowed free access by the military and naval authorities to all the documents at the Horse Guards and Admiralty relating to the Maori War, in order to produce a correct and authentic narrative of events. âThus, I have introduced the name of every officer, non-commissioned officer, or private sentinel, soldier, or seaman I could discover, who is mentioned in any dispatch or report of a creditable action.â.
