Published circa 1876, 8vo, removed document, General Watson Webb, a staunch unionist was appointed by Abraham Lincoln as minister of Brazil where he served throughout the Civil War, and left the service in 1869. While in Brazil he looked after the interests of Americans during the Paraguayan war and secured the settlement of long standing maritime claims. This document deals with the charges stemming from the Caroline Claim - the settlement of a Peruvian ship Caroline- which was docked in a port in Brazil in poor condition, and its sale was arranged. This copy with the ownership signature of Hon. Marcus L. Ward, House of Rep. from New Jersey's 6th District 1873-75. Accompanying this document is a handwritten letter, written and signed by General J. Watson Webb in black ink on March 12, 1882, from New York. No Publishing date (circa 1876). A rare 64 page document, and a nice association copy. The price includes the document and the original letter as described.
