Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Illustrated Edition. Unpaginated. 12 prints. Descriptions in French/English. 16 x 22. A rare find-- two paper-bound works ("Education" and "Recreation") custom-bound with the original light pink paper covers. Artist Alfred Geniole captures the French learning the art of dancing, horsemanship and fencing, then enjoying a game of Blind-man's bluff, picnicking ("rustic meal") and something called Hot-cockles, interestingly illustrated. The colors are subtle though with the velvet colors of red and green still bright and some gold as well. The boards are chocolate brown with gold lettering and a box line front and reverse. The outer cloth spine is strongly intact but the covers show tearing in the upper left-hand corner with a bent lower right-hand corner. Corners are indeed bumped with shelf wear evident. Inside front cover has previous owner's name in ink and pencil markings in upper left-hand corner. Prints themselves are in very good condition but pages are foxed or smudged along edges and several are loosening from the text block which is pulling away from the covers.

First Edition
First Edition. Wonderful Gallic nostalgia, during the Restoration period, of the pre-Revolutionary period, with all the plates supposedly capturing elements of a typical privileged childhood as it would have been experienced in 1770, which date is enshrined in the Rococo florid framing surrounding all the plates. And scarce -- only two institutional holdings listed on OCLC First Search, both in Europe, and curiously, not listing in the catalogue of the BNF! Elephantine Folio, 55.5 by 39 cm. Two title pages, twelve lithographic color plates, six after each of the titles. The color plates, to be more specific, are mostly lightly tinted, with various sepia tones, but with splashes of full and bright color accentuating certain details. The mood, as befitting nostalgia, is a serene romanticized equipoise, with stress and tension entirely banished, but also enlivened with touches of visual humor, such as a dancemaster's absurdly small violin, or the horses in the Horsemanship plate being more like Rocking Horses. Somehow, too, the children look more like miniature adults, yet all the time unmistakably children. For the six education plates, we are shown lessons in dancing, music, equitation, drawing, fencing and writing. For pastimes, the activities including a game we never heard of called "Hot Cockles", then blind man's bluff, playing on a swing, boating, a picnic and badminton, or an early form of it. Brief captions for the plates rendered in both French and English. Rebacked, with cloth. Leather has several tears and spots of loss on front board, mainly where volume suffered serious bumping, lower right corner, upper left corner, with board bent awkwardly in these locations. Rear board suffered a similar fate to a lesser degree, but has a scar, not overly conspicuous but of considerable length, in its center. Hinges cracked. Some disengagement of plates with their tabs, or put another way, the tabs are lifting off their plates here and there. Scattered light foxing, and one plate with a larger splotch in its margins. The pictorial centerpiece of the plates, though, uniformly attractive and un-blemished. Morocco covering boards. Cloth spine.
