Cet ouvrage conte l'histoire de la ville d'Anvers, de sa fondatio…n au VIIe siècle jusqu'à l'annexion de la ville aux Pays-Bas espagnols au XVIe siècle. L'ouvrage est richement illustré d'un frontispice en chromolithographie figurant les armoiries de la ville, de 23 planches et de nombreuses vignettes figuratives gravées dans le texte. Les planches se composent de 4 chromolithographies figurant les armoiries des familles et corporations d'Anvers, deux planches dépliantes donnant un panorama d'Anvers au début du XVIe siècle, de plusieurs vues de la ville d'Anvers à différentes époques et de portraits d'illustres personnalités de la ville. Eugène Gens fut professeur d'histoire à l'école de l'Athénée à Anvers. Il rédigea plusieurs ouvrages sur l'histoire de la Belgique et des Flandres. De la bibliothèque de Charles Herpin. Il fut directeur général de la Société générale de 1867 à 1872. Son ex-libris décoré fut conservé et soigneusement recollé après la reliure. Très bon exemplaire.
