Contact seller4-star sellerPaperback. Condition: Good. OVersized. Some minor wear and minor tearing around the edges of the cover. In great solid shape otherwise. From the Foreword: "By way of background, I spent my grade school and teenage years during the 1950's in a small neat little community located in central Queens, New York called Glendale. From the schoolyard of PS 113 or the backyard of our home (during a time when dairy cows were still grazing along Woodhaven Blvd.) I felt a special excitement watching low flying piston aircraft move in and out of nearby LaGuardia and Idlewild Airports. Back in the 1950's, before color tv and amusement "theme" parks, (although we visited Rockaways Playland and Palisades Park in New Jersey) for many of us the airport was a place to go and have fun. On weekends we'd all pile into the oldest kid's car and drive out and jump over the turnstile at LaGuardia's skywalk observation deck and later we'd motor over to view the construction, airplanes and excitement at Idlewild. I don't remember how many times our group went for those joy rides but it must have totaled a thousand trips. Today, over 20 years later, I still can see the Fountain of Liberty in front of the IAB ablaze with light, shooting plumes of spray into the evening sky, and diners in the Golden Door peering out at us on the observation deck as we goofed around in front of the airplanes. Ill never forget the day I finally got my dad to take my brother Greg and I to the Golden Door for dinner, and the look on his face when he saw the prices-"three dollars for a hamburger, jeez" he lamented. One night in 1959 during a particularly severe winter with piles of snow everywhere, three of us (suffering, I think, from acute cabin fever after having been cooped up in the house for weeks) decided to push our old Ford out of a snowdrift on to Woodhaven Boulevard and drive out to the Pan Am Terminal "for coffee." Somehow our trio, which included my chums Joe Tbmaszewski and Jim DeMeloitz, made it to Idlewild and after a few hours we started back home. Our car promptly got stuck in an exit ramp near the United Terminal, but after a short while a passing Port Authority vehicle helped push us free. To this day every time I drive on that particular ramp I remember one night at the airport a long time ago. Reflecting over those trips to the airport I must say even though most of our crowd rarely if ever got to fly anywhere, the excitement and rush of the airplanes arriving from places we'd never seen and departing to destinations yet to be explored left a lasting impression on each of us. In any case my friend Joe Tbmaszewski just completed his 14th year as a mechanic at TWA's Hangar, Jimmy DeMeloitz has spent 12 years with Eastern Cargo across the street at Hangar 9, and I'm currently entering my eleventh year at JFK publishing Air Cargo News. Even now, after so many years, JFK to me is still an awesome proposition both in size and diversity of activity. Make no mistake, there is no other airport in the world to rival JFK. And never again will another JFK be built. For a variety of reasons this is the last of the great airports to include expressive individual airline unit terminals. No homogenized sameness at JFK. From the elegant sweeping curve of the International Arrivals Building, to TWAs Saarinen masterpiece, to the expressive multicolored tile facade of the American Airlines unit terminal-JFK is an extremely rare thing today-a genuine original. Despite the variety of life at JFK there is a degree of sameness in the pictorial histories that have been created of the airport over the years. For the historian, picture essays of first flights, celebrities waving hello and goodbye, construction, maintenance, cargo, ticket counters and flight kitchens have tended after four years of research to become a blur . . ." 200 pages. …
