Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. "Die Handlung des Zweiten Teils von Goethes Faust Akademische Antrittsvorlesung" translated loosely as "The Plot of the Second Part of Goethe's Faust". The Academic Inaugural Lecture, by Georg Witkowski. This is the First Edition, published in 1898 by Dr. Seele & Co. in Leipzig, Germany.… The text is entirely in modern German. The book is in paperback format. This is an x-library volume, having been officially removed from the collection of a college library and so marked. The book has an inked inscription in a cursive hand, which I cannot fully make out. A Professor Friedberg is mentioned - and a name which seems to be Hofusser (?). The inscription is dated 8 - 4 - 1898. Georg Witkowski was a Jewish professor and scholar of German literary history, focussing on Goethe, Schiller, Lessing, and Arthur Schnitzler. He was an important influence on Thomas Mann. Witkowski was also the cofounder and Chairman of the Society of Bibliophiles, and editor of the Magazine for Book Lovers" ("Jahrbuch für Bücherfreunde" - still being published). Von Hindenburg awarded him the Goethe Medal for Art and Science in 1932, but in 1933 his pension was denied because of the Civil Service Act, and he was harassed and eventually the Nazis arrested him, claiming that he had received letters of subversive intent. He was released, emigrated to Leiden, the Netherlands, where he died in 1939. CONDITION -- GOOD ONLY -- This book was previously owned by a college library, from which it has been officially deaccessioned, and with the inked catalog number and discard stamp at the top corner of the front cover, and the following particulars :: EXTERIOR : Spine is rubbed. Modest weathering about edges and to spine. A serious impact has creased the foot of the spine; evidence of mending to cover attachment at spine; fore-edge corner tips bumped with attendant creasing and loss to bottom fore-edge corner tip; moderate surface rub - a few smudges and ink smears; nicking and small tears about the edges ; one instance of small loss to top edge of rear cover. BINDING : Solid as can be expected. No leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR : Most of the leaves are bumped and creased at the top and bottom fore-edge corners; I spotted at least two minute inked bits of marginalia ( a | )with accompanying mark to text, correcting the spelling in the text. There are scattered small smudges and the sort, but the interior is else clean and presentable.

Und das Werk von Freudenthal, Die Musik der Naturvölker kennen Sie selbstverständlich". - Georg Witwoski studierte in Leipzig und München, wo er 1886 summa cum laude promoviert wurde. 1889 habilitierte er sich in Leipzig und wirkte anschließend als Privatdozent und ab 1897 als Extraordinarius für Deutsche Sprache und Literatur daselbst. 1899 war Witkowski Mitbegründer und Vorsitzender der Gesellschaft der Bibliophilen. Erst 1919 erhielt der erfolgreiche Literaturhistoriker eine außerordentliche Professur in Leipzig. Auf die ordentliche Professur wartete Witkowski beinahe vergebens: Er erhielt sie 1929, nur ein Jahr vor seiner Emeritierung, wobei ihm der damit verbundene Lehrstuhl und die Verbeamtung verwehrt blieben. Diese Diskriminierungen gründeten zweifellos in Witkowskis jüdischer Herkunft. 1932 wurde ihm die Goethe-Medaille für Kunst und Wissenschaft durch den Reichspräsidenten Hindenburg verliehen, doch bereits 1933 verlor Witkowski aufgrund des Berufsbeamtengesetzes seine Lehrbefugnis und 1934 sämtliche Ruhegehälter. Im Mai 1939 emigrierte er zu Verwandten seiner Frau ins niederländische Leiden, wo er weniger Monate später an einer Krebserkrankung starb. - Auf Briefpapier mit gedrucktem Briefkopf: "Professor Dr. Georg Witkowski Leipzig-Gohlis Ehrensteinstraße 20". Der Mitbegründer und Vorsitzende der Gesellschaft der Bibliophilen nimmt im Schreiben aus dem Mai 1921 an Albert Soergel direkt Bezug auf die im Februar des Jahres gegründete Gesellschaft der Bücherfreunde zu Chemnitz und möchte gerne darüber in seiner Zeitschrift für Bücherfreu…nde berichten. Es folgen Planungsdetails zu seinem Vortrag Das schöne Buch in Chemnitz. Im Jahr 1922 bedankt sich Witkowski für die neue Gabe, die freilich ein anderer Fisch ist als Ina Seidels gutmütiger Weißling. Da er in den folgenden Zeilen die Bekenntnishefte erwähnt, bezieht sich dieser Ausspruch wahrscheinlich auf die ersten beiden Hefte dieser Reihe (Ina Seidel, Mein Lebensweg und Heinrich Lersch, Das ist es!). Witkowski lobt Martin Richard Möbius Triumph der Venus (Witkowski schreibt Geburt der Venus ), den Chemnitzer Druck des Jahres 1923 sowie Schaeffers autobiographische Skizze (wahrscheinlich das fünfte Bekenntnisheft, Albrecht Schaeffer, Abkunft und Ankunft). - Guter Zustand. 300 gr.
