A 17th-century Protestant polemic against Roman Catholicism, it is a detailed historical-theological treatise designed to undermine papal claims and support Protestant (especially Anglican) arguments during the Reformation-era debates. This book was originally written by George C…rakanthorp, (1567?1624), but was published posthumously after his death by his brother Richard Crakanthorp who was bishop to King James I of England. Crakanthorp, an English clergyman, uses the council (which dealt with the "Three Chapters" controversy and issues of Christology) to argue that the Roman Church had already departed from ancient purity by that time, accusing it of novelty, heresy, and idolatry. It reflects the intense anti-Catholic sentiment of the period.ABOUT THIS COPY: At almost 400 years old, we've graded this copy as VG-. Copies of this first edition are rare. Dark brown leather hardcover boards, rubbed and scuffed. Blindstamp design on spine. Leather is missing from top half of spine. Both hinges are starting, although the main text block binding remains mostly solid. Library bookplate inside front cover. Some writing in pencil on front endpapers, as well as a previous owner's name written in pen. Main text body appears to be free from writing or marginalia. Mild foxing throughout. xx. 505 pp. Alphabetical table (index) at back.
