Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A detailed memoir and regional history of Skyland Resort and Stony Man Mountain in Virginia's Blue Ridge, written by longtime Skyland proprietor George Freeman Pollock (1868-1949), one of the most influential figures in the early development of tourism and conservation in the Shenan…doah region. The work combines autobiography, local history, resort culture, mountain folklore, natural history, and firsthand accounts of the creation of Shenandoah National Park. Illustrated with numerous historical photographs depicting resort life, mountain communities, staff, guests, transportation, and early recreational activities. The foreword by Senator Harry F. Byrd underscores the book's importance as a primary source documenting the origins of one of America's most visited national parks. Book condition is Very Good. Pages are clean and bright with light age toning, no writing, highlighting, or ownership marks observed. Binding remains sound and square. The pictorial paper-covered boards show moderate shelf wear, edge rubbing, corner bumping, and several small chips along the spine edges. Despite cosmetic wear, the volume remains attractive overall. First edition, 1960, with copyright page stating 'Copyright © 1960 by Chesapeake Book Company' and no later printing indications present. Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 60-16567. This remains one of the key collectible histories of Skyland Resort and the development of Shenandoah National Park. George Freeman Pollock (1868-1949) has been called the 'Father' of Shenandoah National Park by virtue of establishing and operating a vacation resort there called 'Skyland' from 1894 to 1937. He overcame huge financial challenges and protected the land from fires, logging and development long enough to see the U.S. Parks Service initiate a search for the site of a new national park in the S. Appalachians and then helped coordinate and fund the PR campaign which led to the creation of Shenandoah National Park in 1936, with Skyland at its center. 'Pollock Knob' a 3,580 foot-high peak in the park was dedicated to his memory in 1951.
